The Norwegian Breakaway is an iconic ship. The hull is painted brightly with the Statue of Liberty and the NYC skyline, making it one of the most easily recognizable in NCL’s fleet. The Breakaway is, to me, a very classically designed cruise ship. Norwegian has a few outliers in their fleet (read: the Norwegian Epic!), but this one feels very timeless, structured in a functional and typical way. However, you will still find some unique characteristics! Here are my top tips for sailing on the Norwegian Breakaway.

1. Busy buffet alternative
The buffet on the Norwegian Breakaway is about what you’d expect from these mega cruise ships: BUSY. Going at off times is the key to dodging the crowds, but it is almost unavoidable during breakfast! Instead of fighting tooth and nail for a table, go up to the American Diner on deck 16! They have an overflow breakfast buffet set up every morning and it was never busy. You won’t find it to be as large or as robust as the main buffet downstairs, but you can find almost the exact same food (just in smaller trays). There was plenty of extra seating, and you can enjoy the outdoors while also being sheltered from the wind. Such a hidden secret!

2. Comfy loungers (without an up charge!)
Looking for a little bit of an upgrade, without an up charge? Deck 16 has a small amount of loungers with padding! I didn’t discover these until our last sea day, which bummed me out that I didn’t find them sooner! These loungers are found on the inside of the jogging track, on both the port and starboard sides by the American Diner and the Video Arcade. These are definitely an upgrade from the blue loungers found down by the pool. These ones are comfier and in the shade, which can be a nice reprieve from the direct sun!

3. Quiet indoor space
If you’re looking for a quiet indoor space to relax, the Bliss Lounge is your ticket! So long as there is no scheduled event going on, the doors are open and guests are free to use this as a lounge space. Since this area is branded more as a night club, the days are usually pretty open and free! We found this area on our last sea day and relaxed on the couches playing board games. It was a great escape from the rest of the loud and busy ship. While we were in there, there was a scheduled solo travelers meet up, but they were contained to one end of the lounge and they said we were free to continue enjoying the rest of the space!
4. Theatre shows are first come, first served
Now I will admit that I’m not sure if this tip is specific to sailing on the Norwegian Breakaway or on all ships across Norwegian’s fleet. On my sailing in April 2026, there was no longer a way to make theatre show reservations in advance. Instead, the shows were first come, first served. My guess is this was a way to cut down on no-shows, but it now means you need to line up at the theatre very early before show time! For this reason, I never actually made it for a show during my cruise. The one time I tried to get in for Burn the Floor, I arrived about ten minutes before show time and it was standing room only. If there is a show you are eager to see, definitely plan for enough time!

5. No advance dining reservations? No problem!
120 days prior to your sailing (or a few days earlier if you have status), you can begin to book dining reservations! I always calendar this date for cruises booked in advance so I lock in the restaurants and times I want. However, if you miss this window: do not stress! NCL only releases about 25% of dining reservations at this time, keeping the large majority of times available to book once you board. I booked this cruise only a few weeks before departure, and the only times available on the app were for 9:00 pm or later. That was not going to work for this early bird!
Instead, immediately after you board and check into your muster station, head over to The Manhattan Room on deck 7. The entire restaurant is dedicated to booking dining and there will be plenty of staff to help. I had zero trouble getting reservations at Palomar and Cagney’s at a good time!

Bonus: Espresso Machines!
There are so many perks for traveling solo, but this was a top one for me! If you are sailing on the Norwegian Breakaway in one of their studio or solo cabins (solo inside, oceanview, or balcony), you will get access to the Studio Lounge. This lounge, located on deck 10, is only available to guests booked in these cabins. You will need your key card to access this part of the ship and inside you will find plenty of comfy seats, tables, a bar, and snacks. It’s a great place to meet other solo travelers!
Also available in the lounge is a full espresso machine! There is nowhere else on the ship where I saw these machines (the buffet only had straight coffee). You can make specialty drinks such as cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, or even just get a shot of espresso. I would get my morning Starbucks on board and then come up to the lounge to add an extra shot to power me through my day. Such a win!
