What to Expect Visiting Louis’ Lunch: Home of the World’s First Hamburger

July 3, 2020 No Comments

Who doesn’t love a good hamburger?! They are juicy, meaty, and always hit the spot. The only way to pay tribute to such an American icon is to visit the birthplace: Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, CT. While many other places claim to have invented the hamburger, only Louis’ Lunch is recognized by the Library of Congress as the Birthplace of the Hamburger Sandwich. Here’s what to expect visiting Louis’ Lunch!

The Basics

For over 100 years, Louis’ Lunch has been serving up original hamburgers- in exactly the same way. It is currently run by the 4th generation and is one of the oldest, family-run businesses in the country. They have historically been cash-only, but as of May 1, 2020 they now accept credit cards. The best part about this place is that your dining experience will be the same as it was back in 1890!

Expect a wait

This place is well known to both locals and tourists. On most days, they open at 12:00 pm noon, and expect a line waiting at the door. The place is small- only about a dozen chairs across a few tables and barstools. However, that’s part of the charm! It’s cozy, authentic, and fun. I felt like I was jumping back in time to the 1800’s and stopped off for lunch after riding my horse and doing… other things people did in the 1800’s.

The Burgers

Every burger at Louis’ Lunch is cooked made-to-order in the authentic vertical cast iron grills (that were common in the late 1800’s). This isn’t fast food, expect to wait at least 10-15 minutes for your burger (even more depending how busy it is). It’s made with love and is worth the wait!

Forget buns, these burgers are served on two pieces of toasted white bread. It’s then sliced diagonally (just like the original) and served on a classic white paper plate. If you’re looking for sides, your choices are either potato chips or potato salad. No frills here!

Don’t Ask For Ketchup

The ordering process at Louis’ Lunch is a specific one. These people have been set in their ways for over 120 years, and are not looking to change things up. The menu is short, sweet, and to the point. You have your choice of only three toppings: cheese, onions, and tomatoes. That’s it.

If you’d like your burger plain, you’ll order an “original.” If you’d like it with all three toppings, you’ll order a “cheese works.”

Unless you want a good laugh in your face, don’t ask for anything else. That includes ketchup, mustard, and (if you’re like me), bacon. When I asked for bacon on my burger I got a chuckle, a head shake, and was given a solid “no” response. Don’t be like me!
