Whether you are island hopping around Hawaii, or Kauai is your destination, it is not to be missed! Hawaii’s Garden Isle is incredibly diverse for such a small island. In fact, it is so small that it only takes about 2 hours to get from one side to the other. However, what is lacks in size, it makes up for in natural beauty! On Kauai, you will find canyons, waterfalls, plenty of chickens, and the most stunning coastline you’ll ever see. While any amount of time is not enough, here’s how to maximize two days on Kauai!
Visit the Waimea Canyon
“The Grand Canyon of the Pacific” is an absolute must-do on your visit to Kauai! Waimea Canyon is easily visited by car, and has a nicely paved road to three different viewing areas. You’ll definitely want to step out of the car at each one to take in the sights! The scenery changes as you climb and the canyon becomes more and more pronounced. There are plenty of hikes into the canyon for more adventurous travelers, but for those looking for an easy awe-inspiring day can see just fine from the platforms. We were even lucky enough to catch a native Hawaiian at the top telling stories and legends about the canyon and its powers.
Take a Cruise Along the Nā Pali Coast
Absolutely no trip to Kauai is complete without visiting this stunning coastline. The Nā Pali coast is located on the Northwestern coast of Kauai and spans 16 miles long. It is absolutely breathtaking. There are many different ways to visit this coast (boat, helicopter, or even hiking), but a car is not one of them.
We originally booked a boat tour with Nā Pali Riders for a day of snorkeling and sightseeing aboard their zodiac raft. However, about 12 hours before arrival time the night before, we received a text that our tour was cancelled. They said the weather forecast was bad, however we later found out that that wasn’t true. They cancelled on us because they didn’t have enough people on the tour. Shame!
On a brighter note, we were able to rebook with Holo Holo Charters for a cruise the next day and were so happy with our decision! Since time was of the essence, they were only able to book us on their sunset dinner cruise. At first we were disappointed not to be able to snorkel, but it honestly was better this way! The glow upon the cliffs at sunset are truly indescribable. Plus, the boat had nets on the front that you could ride on as you sailed, offering the occasional splash or fish sighting! Plus, we were grateful to have the rest of the day earlier to explore Kauai. It really was the best case scenario!
Cool Down at Wishing Well Shave Ice
If you go to Hawaii and you don’t have shave ice, did you really visit Hawaii? And there is no better place to go than Wishing Well! Located right in the center of the town of Hanelei, Wishing well was also voted best shave ice in Hawaii by yours truly. The flavors were rich and the vibe was authentic Hawaiian. It’s a small shack off Kuhio Highway and offered fresh, organic juices to cover your ice. They offered a small shop of tee shirts, stickers, and trinkets that were a better souvenir to bring home than the typical Made in China garbage. Plus, they made efforts to limit their waste by serving their shave ice in recycled bowls and giving metal spoons. My mouth is drooling just writing this!
Walk around Hanalei
Hanalei is the picture perfect beach town. Located on the north shore of Kauai, this town is is everything you were looking for in a Hawaiian vacation. The town is nestled between huge green cliffs and the bright blue sea with pristine golden beaches. The town itself is small, and very walkable. The main street (Kuhio Highway) is dotted with small shops and restaurants. It’s here where you’ll find authentic souvenirs to take home, and meet with some of the nicest people. It’s no wonder that celebs like Julia Roberts, Ben Stiller, and even Oprah own homes in this paradise town!
Rent Boogie Boards and hit the waves
Sure, when you think of Hawaii you may think of surfing, not boogie boarding. And while that may be true, unless you are incredibly athletically gifted (which I am not), surfing may be an overwhelming and difficult choice. Instead, we decided to rent boogie boards for 2 days from Boss Frog’s. There are three locations on the island, and you cannot beat the prices (only $8/day!). Trust me, you’ll have a blast riding the waves and (inevitably) getting thrown around by them. The hardest we laughed on this trip was boogie boarding around the Hanalei Bay. So velcro that wrist strap, and hit the waves!
Visit Wailua Falls
Wailua Falls are located on the east side of the island, only about a 15 minute drive from the main city of Lihue. A stunning double waterfall, Wailua Falls are easy to get to and admire for the natural beauty and lush greenery that surrounds. Locals who were nearby told us that rainbows are frequent here, since isolated showers are so common. It is an easy, paved road to the top of the falls with a parking area and small trail to admire the falls. More adventurous travelers can take the short (but steep) hike to the base for a different angle and a refreshing mist. We were crunched for time so elected to admire her beauty from the top.
Walk the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail
The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail runs along the south shore of Kauai just outside the town of Poipu. This trail hugs the coast and goes through many beaches and historic Hawaiian landmarks. The breeze from the ocean will keep you cool, but do not forget your sunscreen, hat, and water! While you may not feel yourself burning, this trail is completely exposed to the sun. If it recently rained, be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes.
