When the mountains call, you must go. The Green Mountain region of Vermont just might be, hands down, the best fall weekend getaway! You’ll get spectacular views of changing leaves, quaint towns, incredible things to eat, and some of the most tranquil sunsets. Here’s how to spend the perfect fall weekend in Vermont!
Explore Downtown Burlington
The city of Burlington is nestled right on the shores of Lake Champlain, and is the perfect size for an afternoon stroll. Walk along the waterfront on the Island Line trail, or give into some retail therapy along the pedestrian-only Church Street. Sit outside at one of the many restaurants and enjoy the fall weather while you can.
Cold Hollow Cider Mill
Is there anything more fall than a cup of crisp apple cider? Nope, didn’t think so. Take a drive out to Cold Hollow Cider Mill for a tall glass and a donut (or two) to go with! The cider is freshly pressed on site and even have large windows so you can peek in and see the magic happening. The large shop attached is also not to be missed. I always stock up on my fall snacks while I’m here! Get the maple bark and thank me later 😉
Drive to the Summit of Mt. Mansfield
Mount Mansfield is the highest peak in Vermont, and is home to the Stowe Mountain Resort. In the offseason, they open an auto toll road up to the summit for incredible views. Finding the entrance can be tricky with a GPS, so here is an exact pin to the entrance road. The drive is steep and windy, so make sure you follow the instructions (such as turning off your air conditioner, being in low gear for the descend) so you don’t damage your car. Once you get to the top, there is a visitors center and a few trailheads (oh, and views for days).
Tour the Ben & Jerry’s Factory
No sweeter way to spend the day than with a tour through an ice cream factory! Tours are $3 per person and leave regularly throughout the day. You’ll get a chance to see them make your favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavors right before your eyes (hello Chubby Hubby), and then even sample a few for free! Afterwards, stop at the scoop shop for more, or even a Vermonster Sundae.
Hike Through Sterling Falls Gorge
The Sterling Falls Gorge is a great way to get out into nature and explore Vermont’s natural beauty! There are a few different trails here, ranging in difficulty and length, but plenty of flat and easy trails for all levels. The trailheads can be difficult to find (we circled the area for a half an hour and almost called it quits). Here is an exact link to the parking area. Enjoy hiking along the Sterling Brook down to the falls. Happy trails!
Get Lost in a Corn Maze
Nothing screams “fall” more than a corn maze! Percy Farm Corn Maze is the perfect spot for some wholesome fun. We had a blast getting turned around inside the aisles of corn, convinced we were going the right way (when we absolutely were not). The best part? The maze isn’t too hard. We were able to escape in about 30 minutes (which was just before the frustration set in).
Tour the Magic Hat Brewing Company
When the adventures from the day start to catch up to you, no better way to unwind than with a tour at Magic Hat Brewing Co. Tours of the brewery are $3 per person and run 7 days a week at various times in the afternoon. The tour is quick (only about 30 minutes), but you’ll get a chance to go behind the scenes of the quirky brewery, and sample three flavors of beer! Afterwards, grab a pint (or two, or three) at the bar while admiring all the strange artifacts.
Relax dockside on the Burlington Bay
I’ve never felt more at peace than I did in this moment! Watch the sun slowly set over Lake Champlain and New York’s Adirondack Mountains while you sit with your feet dangling off the docks. Watch the sailboats come in for the day, or watch the ferries cross the lake into Plattsburgh, NY. There are plenty of restaurants that line the water to enjoy a bite after the sun goes down.
Catch the Sunset on the Island Line Trail
I’m starting to think there is no bad place to watch the sunset in Vermont! The Island Line Trail was such a unique way to end the day. The walk starts at Causeway Park and jets out into Lake Champlain on a break wall. The pathway is flat and paved, and is perfect for biking as well. There is even a ferry that will connect the end of the path to Allen Point in South Hero, VT.
