A Chubby Girl’s Guide to Hiking Burney Falls

July 21, 2021 No Comments

As a proud chubby traveler, nothing gives me more of a pit in my stomach than someone suggesting a hike. Things could either go really well- or really… not. As soon as a hike hits the itinerary, I frantically scour the internet trying to find out every single detail. I must brace myself by knowing the exact length, incline, time, difficulty. I guess you can say I enjoy an “outdoor stroll” rather than a “hike”. The good news is- Burney Falls is the perfect balance between the two, and is a must-do while in Northern California! It’s easy to do, has plenty of places to rest, and is incredibly scenic. Here’s a chubby girl’s guide to hiking Burney Falls!

Getting to the Falls

While the loop trail in itself is 1.2 miles, if your goal is just to see the falls- you’re in luck! A paved path leads about 1/3 of a mile down from the main parking lot directly to the falls. Walking down is on an incline, but very manageable and has railings to hold onto during the steeper areas. The trail is wide and has plenty of different scenic spots to stop and rest or take some photos. It’s a downhill walk so, of course, be prepared to walk back up it after your visit. This part of the path is designed for all skill levels!

Once you make it down to the falls, you can stay as little or as long as you’d like! The hundreds of rocks at the base make for the perfect place to relax and take in the bright blue water. In the summer months, people often make a day out of it- packing picnics and going swimming!

Pro tip: this is a very popular attraction and the parking lot fills up quickly. Get there early!

Beyond the Falls

Should you choose to continue on the rest of the trail (and I recommend that you do!), there is no shortage of scenic views. The rest of the trail is dirt with a gradual incline. The trail follows the river as it empties from the base of the falls and leads you back up to the top. The first section is a flat, easy walk and leads you to a bridge that crosses the river (shown above). The perfect place for photo ops! After the bridge, you’ll begin the gradual incline to the top of the falls. Should a flat walk be all you’re looking for, you can always turn back here!

The trail continues to be wide with benches scattered throughout to stop and rest. Wooden handrails are also placed along the downhill side should you need something to hold onto. Continuing along the trail, you’ll get to take in the falls from a new perspective and even see where the Pacific Crest Trail cuts through! Once you make it to the top, you’ll walk across another wooden bridge over the river. The large pine trees line the flowing river and it is arguably one of the most peaceful places you’ll ever experience.

The trail then leads you straight back to the main parking lot. You also have the option to go back down to the base of the falls. At the end of the day, it took us about 2 hours to visit and do the full loop trail. Keep in mind, this is factoring in plenty of time to take in the falls, rest, and – of course – have photoshoots.

What To Wear and Pack

Although the trail loop is relatively short, you’ll still want to be dressed properly!

Even if you just plan to walk down to the falls and back, a good pair of sneakers is a must. As you get closer to the falls, the mist can make the pavement slippery and you’ll want extra traction. I always recommend wearing leggings or bike shorts on a hike, no matter how short. Once the chub rub starts, there is no turning back! If that is not an option, a few swipes of a powder-based deodorant on your inner thighs can usually do the trick for a short-term solution. A hat is also key in either season; whether it’s to keep the sun off your face in summer, or your ears warm in the winter. Having layers available is also key. You’re in the mountains, which will make the temperatures much cooler than the nearby city of Redding.

Your packing list can vary quite a bit depending on the season you are visiting, and how long you plan to stay. If in the summer months, definitely pack a towel and water shoes for swimming in the pool! You’ll want to wear your swimsuit under your clothes, as there are no facilities to change at the base of the falls. Don’t forget your waterproof camera for epic water shots. Sunscreen and water in the summer are also a must, and bug spray if you plan on staying later in the evening. If you’re visiting in the winter like we did, I simply packed a water bottle and my camera. The temperatures were mild, but not warm enough where we made a day of it.

Other To-Do’s in Burney State Park

Yes, this is technically a chubby girl’s guide to hiking Burney Falls- but we can’t forget about the other scenic areas in Burney State Park! Continue down the main road in the park (Lake Road) and you’ll end at Lake Britton. Should you have access to a boat, there are launches to enjoy a day out on the water. If not, you can walk around the shores and on the docks for ultimate scenic views and prime photoshoot locations. My favorite shots come from standing at the end of a dock with the pine trees reflecting in the water. Shortly before the parking lot at the end of the road, you’ll pass shelters and picnic tables. The perfect place to stop and enjoy a lunch!

If you’re looking for a souvenir (or anything else, really) the Burney Falls General Store is a must. It’s a cute, quick stop and an opportunity to grab anything from snacks, to tee-shirts, to that bottle of sunscreen you forgot.
